Upgraded brakes of the 93 Cobra

Post by big frank »

As much as I love this car, it seems like the brakes are not enough for what the car is. I have read some articles that copy my feelings on the stock brakes. One article said that the early Cobra R's used 1994 spec brakes on them. I'm sure that there are better components or kits for us now. Anyone have a recomendation with actual usage on something? I know the 93's are a special size, so I'm sure that some things for these cars are going to be limited. Thanks in advance....

Only difference in 93 cobra brakes and 93 GT brakes is the rotor 'hat' size.
They have the same caliper, same rotor size, etc..

I did the Baer 4 lug kit on the front of mine so that I could retain the use of OEM wheels. It's the same brakes as what came on the 94-up cobras from the OEM if you don't care about changing to 5 lug. Its a huge difference.

So are you saying that the 94-up stuff is only 5 lug? I certianly want to retain my stock wheels, so I would need something that would work with them.

yes 94-up cars are 5-lug.

Baer offers a 13" rotor, dual piston caliper for our cars in 4 lug

Excelent! Do they make the rotors for both the front and rear? Do the calipers come with the rotors? Thanks...

Front kit is all you will need. Trust me. It will set you back about $1300 for the front

I have heard that the brakes mentioned work awesome and are worth the money spent.

Baer's kit works great. I've had it on my 93 for probably 9 or more years now. Only problem is replacement rotors are rather pricy, something like 200 a side. FWIW, those of us with their early kits, like mine, actualy have modified Corvette rotors.

If your car is going to see only street duty, it's really not worth spending the money for this upgrade. I'm sure you can find improved performance from a better set of pads and rotors.

That is alittle pricey. But still if you are looking for performance, I am sure they are the way to go.

I would love to have a set of those brakes, but I want to keep my stock wheels. I need something upgraded that will let me keep 4 lug wheels. Is there anything out there?

Update!

Post by big frank »

While I did find some other brakes for the Cobra, they still are a bunch of money. I did find an article that showed some brake mods for the stock brakes that are supposed to make a difference.

One was changing the calipers rubber mounts for steel mounts. The claim is that the claipers change position when you brake with the factory rubber bushing on the caliper mounts. Alos, getting a good high performance pad like pads from Hawk is said to make a big difference. They make a performance street pad as well as a ceramic and street/track pad. Also, ther eis a way to upgrade the caliper I believe from a Lincon that are 73mm. Brembo makes a factory size rotor that is reasonable, as well as a couple of others. They said they would work on the 93 Cobras, but I haven't confermed this. I can dig ip the article if you guyw want to see it.

unless you actually changing the rotor size then you are wasting money on buying rotors.

the other mods you mentioned (73mm calipers, pads) will be better than stock. Go ahead and do SS brake lines too.
