03/04 Cobra T56 Swap in 1993 Cobra
I am in the process of rebuilding the transmission in my 1993 cobra and I came across a smokin deal on a 03/04 Cobra T-56 transmission. Will installing a T-56 transmission help or hurt the resale value of my 1993 cobra?
Although my car is extremely clean, it isn't 100% original. I bought it with lowering springs, upper/lower control arms, exhaust and a few other aftermarket parts already installed.

Aftermarket mods do hurt the value of a 93 Cobra ... DEPENDING on how many miles your car has. (Low mileage cars vs 100k +)
HOWEVER... If the mod requires you cutting into the sheet metal... its gonna screw the value totally.

The transmission swap is a "bolt right in" type of deal, assuming you have all of the necessary parts for the swap. There is no cutting or hacking required.
I purchased my car from the original owner with 79k original miles.
It is so hard to accuratley gauge the value of a Cobra because the prices are all over the board. Some modded ones you see go for $16k + while other modded ones sit on the market and have a hard time pulling $7k.
My goal is to do tasteful modifications to my Cobra while increasing its value... if that is possible.

To put it simply, No. If you want to mod, do so and enjoy, but increasing the value mods will not do.

Do it! I was tempted when I swapped my trans. Then throw some low gears in that sob!

It may help you, the t-5 generally breaks down to .67 or .68 final drive gear where the t-56 breaks down to a .63, so in turn it may help you get better MPG on the top end. The downfall is you will have to shift one more time, I thought about doing it to my several cars to get better MPG. Even if you do up grade the rear gear set it may still help you also.351wlx wrote:I am in the process of rebuilding the transmission in my 1993 cobra and I came across a smokin deal on a 03/04 Cobra T-56 transmission. Agreed. Although many mods (if done correctly and tastefully) don't hurt the values of these cars as much as some of the "stock is best" crowd think they do. I totally agree with the "mod and enjoy" advice. For me, the increased performance and fun of my modded Cobra over stock more than offsets any potential loss in value.escogt wrote:Agreed.psucobra wrote:To put it simply, No. If you want to mod, do so and enjoy, but increasing the value mods will not do.351wlx wrote:My goal is to do tasteful modifications to my Cobra while increasing its value... if that is possible.
Let's be honest. No one is making a fortune on these cars. Ultra low mile completely stock Cobras are only selling for $5K to $8K over their '93 sticker prices. Is that return worth barely driving it for the last 21 years? I think not.

Like this one.... http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/4425806878.html
I'm sorry. But, only 1500 miles, come on. IMO, I would be much more impressed to see an original or nicely modded cobra with at least 20k+ miles that's clean, been taken care of, and enjoyed at least somewhat....

I agree as well. Like #1521. Super clean, original & has a drivable 24K miles on her. I plan on taking her out tomorrow morning for a local Sunday morning criuse-in by the beach. I love Spring!!BrettT wrote:I agree Z!Z282SLO wrote:

Tasteful mods vs otherwise do make a difference.
Alot of times if your bolting on parts from other year Cobras... (Like a 5 lug swap for example). Your putting on parts that will tend to hold their value.
79k.... I don't think I would be too worried about putting in a T56 tranny. Just keep the original and you should be fine.

I am glad that I am not the only one with this opinion.
I went ahead and purchased the T-56, I just need to make up my mind whether or not I am going to install it.

Install the T-56 and enjoy it. Keep the T-5 as well. I think as long as you have the original parts to go with the car, it will not hurt the value very much at all. That way you could always put it back original if you or the next owner desired. Just a thought.
