i was curious about this myself. I mean, the cars stock components are pretty much anyone with a GT's Xmas list, yet- it only claims 30 extra ponies. Im wondering if the stock cam in a 93 cobra (from what i read- a Tbird cam) is junk?
What kind of gains can be had with just a cam swap?
The stock cobra cam is not a t-bird cam. I had a friend who had the cast gt40 heads with the cobra intake(basicaly the same longblock) and used the e cam and it seemed to run strong.
The stock distributor and ignition module will do all that you need for a mild street build, they are good stuff straight from the factory.
As far as the E cam goes, it is a good swap to make for a little extra kick, especially if emissions are a concern, but to get everything out of it exhaust upgrades are needed.
An exhaust upgrade will wake up the stock stuff as the tubular exhaust manifolds from the factory aren't that great but are a ton better than the old cast iron manifolds.
Yes, if you haven't replaced the standard manifolds with headers your kind of waisting your time. the stock ones are pinched off at the head so exhaust flow will be limited.
Got the E cam put it, it sounds awesome. I also had a 3:55 gear installed. I am very pleased with both. I went ahead and changed out the longer axles with the gt axles to pull in the chrome replica wheels. It made a huge differnce in looks, and the rear tires don't rub anymore. I get compliments everywhere I go about the way it sounds.
i haven't taken any pictures of it lately, but i will send you some when i get them. you should hear it now, it really sounds good. i know the e cam has been labled out dated by several, but you can not beat the way it sounds. the car pulls pretty hard too.
