Heavy Clutch

Post by Dantak »

I complained about how heavy my clutch was when I first bought my cobra. Since then I've replaced the clutch with a Ford Racing King Cobra clutch and replaced the clutch cable. It still is heavy. Not as heavy as when I bought it but it still gives me a sore ankle (it's a daily driver when there is no snow). The only other thing I can think of is the quadrant. I haven't gotten far enough up under the dash to get a good look at it, but if the previous owners replaced it with something crazy I would think the clutch travel would be faster. Before I buy a new quadrant, can you guys think of anything obvious that I'm overlooking?

did you lube the clutch cable before you installed it? If not you can take it off the clutch fork and spray some lube up the cable and it should help alittle.

I think i know what your talking about.

My clutches have always been okay, but i have gotten into a couple mustangs over the years and felt it was a work out to drive them.

I dont know what causes this-- but I feel your pain!

I don't think your supposed to lube the Mustang cables. Aren't they nylon coated?

I drove my buddies '88 GT the other day and it had a crazy stiff pedal, too.

Mine is very light. however.

get rid of the junk king cobra clutch and buy a factory replacement valeo from ford. the kit comes with a new pilot bearing, throw bearing and new clutch with a 12month12k mile warranty. for like 240 bucks. best clutch in my opinion for a stocker. my pedal is so light and effortless my pregnant didnt mind driving at all.

Blaine is right. Our cars came with a special clutch that was similar to a Centerforce design, and had a much lighter pedal effort than a regular GT/LX clutch. The King Cobra has a much heavier effort than a GT/LX, so that's the reason for the stiff pedal. I've put clutches in many Fox 5.0s, and I always use a brand new stock '93 Cobra clutch - to the delight of all I have done that for. Plus, they are good to about 450 HP in a street car.

About 10 years ago, PPI offered the 93-95 Cobra clutch kit for ~$100 and I put one in the 90 LX I owned at the time. I figured it would be a cheap, temporary clutch that wouldn't hold up to much, but I was wrong.

That thing handled everything I threw at it, to include 1.6 60' times and high 11-sec passes. Pedal effort was easy! Much better than the King Cobra or even the Spec Stage 1.

Is Ford the only place to get a Cobra clutch anymore?

well crap....guess I should have posted here before I bought it. Last thing I want to do now is pull the tranny again. American Muscle said the clutch I got was 10% lighter than stock (http://www.americanmuscle.com/kingcobra.html). There is no way I'm gonna replace I clutch I just installed and has less than 1000 miles on it. Guess I'll tough it out.

Where can I get a stock 93 Cobra clutch? I have my stock 93 but I'm also building my 90 SSP Notch to a 347. It will go back in soon with a TKO and need to replace that cheap Pep Boys LUK clutch....or is LUK something special that I've never heard about? Current LUK clutch has about 3k miles on it and all wear indicates it wasn't raced.

I guess I didn't know a '93 Cobra clutch was that good. I was wondering why my clutch has never slipped, even with my 1.6 60fts and 400lbs of TQ.

I have a King Cobra clutch sitting the garage. I heard they were good?

I LOVED the king cobra in my 89. I bolted a S-Trim to that car, some slicks, and went high 11s pulling 1.65 60' on stock suspension. It took me about 3 years of daily abuse to finally wear it out. I"m not joking when I saw I saw 8psi every time I started the car., and winding out 3rd and 4th were very common.
