Widest tire on a 1993 Cobra rim?

What is the widest tire you can fit on the stock 93 cobra rim? 275's?
255. The 275 can be installed, but it is too pinched and the tread contact area is distorted. Need a bare minimum 8.5" wheel for a 275.
