a/c acting up

So a buddy of mine owns a 93 cobra and he says his a/c works fine when driving but when he's at a stop, his a/c stops blowing cold and the temp gauge starts rising towards hot, and he has an aluminum radiator. Any help much apreciated.

Almost sounds like a fan issue Does he have stock fan or electric?

Sounds like his fan is shot. I believe even these older cars will kick the compressor off if the water temps start to rise.

Yes stock fan, so he needs to replace the fan??

Not on our cars it won't. However, if there isn't enough airflow through the condensor, and the pressure gets to high in the a/c system, there also IS NOT a high pressure cut out. Instead, there is basically a pop off valve. Pressure gets too high and it vents excess pressure (and R12) to atmosphere. And makes an awful noise and makes you think you popped a rad hose. Ask me how I know.
In your case, it does sound like your fan clutch might be going out (assuming it's a stock fan setup). Could also be your system needs a little r12 added. But since the water temp is going up, I'd definitely go with a new fan clutch, assuming your thermostat is operating correctly.

Yep.
If the EEC sees the water temp spiking, it will:
increase idle (trying to speed up air flow)
richen the a/f
advance the timing
All in an effort to keep it from melting down.
My 2011 Ecoboost truck, on the other hand, will jump into limp mode until the water temp has dropped. Limits rpm, boost, speed, throttle input, etc. Amazing how much it has all advanced since 93...

You bought an Ecoboost eh? How do you like it so far? Been comptemplating buying the Explorer with one in it for the wife.

If you tow anything at all, you will be very impressed. Even more impressive is it's around town mileage. I get 19.2 around town and 24-25 on the highway.
If you tow, only thing you need to watch for is tongue weight/cargo capacity, especially on supercrew 4wd models.
I highly recommend max tow package, and if you want some serious payload, do the heavy duty payload package with it. Some configurations can have up to 2400# payload.
Engine and the six speed selectshift tranny are an amazing combination. Light years ahead my last truck which was ten years old.
