A/C question

Post by cityboy21 »

My understanding is the switch can be replaced without losing any refrigerant. Not even sure if there is anything wrong with the switch. If its purpose is to shut down the compressor because of low refrigerant, than it seems like it is doing its job. Not sure if I want to take the car to Ford. What is probably a $50-100 fix will end up costing $300-400 knowing them.

Low refridgerent or too much will cause it to not kick on. Either way you look at it you will have to suck the refridgerent down to fix the switch, then they can check for leaks also. Might just fix the switch, change the evaporator filter and refill with r134.

I would atleast go get a diagnosis, before you spend a grip on fixing everything but the problem find the exact problem and no doubt you will be able to fix it yourself

It might be worth a shot to spend 20 dollars and get a can of freon and hook to it to see if adding a little will fix the problem. If not then might have to face the bad news.

There should be a shrader valve under the low pressure switch. Meaning unscrew it and screw on a new one, and it won't leak, maybe just a "psstt" when it comes off. You could connect gauges and bypass the switch and check it.

x2

Check pressure BEFORE you start throwing coolant in it or you could be compounding your problem...

One question, when you jumper the low pressure switch and run the compressor is the air blowing cold ? If so its most likely the switch.

Also look at all the A/C line connections for any signs of oil like wetting that could be a leak.
