When people post that they have a h-pipe or x-pipe does that mean the car likely won't pass state inspection? Or only if they removed the cats? A lot of the sites selling them say "off road use only" and not being very mechanical myself I'm a bit ignorant on the subject. Can anyone clue me in on at?
h-pipes and x-pipes can be catted or non catted, , off-road versions are non catted, no catalytic converters, cars must have converters to pass inspection, some inspectors dont look, some areas have emissions testing where they test the exhaust, usually they will fail with no converters. h and x pipes usually arent too hard to change , so some will swap their original pipe for inspections.
Any exhaust system w/o cats will fail state inspections (both visual and emissions). H-pipe and X-pipes are just the most common exhaust mods to these cars. Of course, if an owner modded their Cobra w/an H-pipe or X-pipe, mufflers, bigger exhaust pipes, etc. but kept their cats, the car would likely still pass inspection. You need to check with the seller about their particular car.
Also, if you're not driving your Cobra much, many states have emissions exemptions for low-mileage, pleasure-use only cars. For example, my state exempts cars registered as classics and driven less than 3000 miles/year from state inspections. In other words, my off-road H-pipe exhaust w/o cats (and all the extra power that provides) is perfectly legal!

Thanks to both of you for the replies. I live in the peoples republic of MA so it's likely one of the more restrictive states for inspections and rules. That sounds about right then an important question to ask (and check) is the existence of cats and or the original exhaust pieces when buying. I imagine getting even an aftermarket cat setup ( assuming seller no longer has originals) is not too difficult for these cars. But it's certainly something to be aware of.

I have both oem full exhaust, I also have a full setup in boxes. I originally got off road x with out cats, but as I read into it.. It seems to say if at idle your car might smell more of gas fumes. So I also purchased a highflow SS cats. Now when I get them installed, atleast the wife will only yell at me for the sound. And not the smell as well! Lol
