tire size for 93 cobra wheels

Post by vuzikis »

Guys I bot a second set of wheels for my 93 cobra and was wondering what the largest size I can run in the rear without rolling the fenders? I was thinking 255/40 17 but have no idea. Let me know if anyone has experience doing this.

largest as in tallest or widest? i think on the rear , the largest would be around a 275/40/17 as far as width goes the 255/40 is a little wider but should be about the same hieght as a 245/45. but different brands will vary in size even though they have the same numeric size.

I had 275/40/17s on my car when it arrived. they fit without any rubbing issues in the back. first thing the guy at Tirerack said when I pulled the car inside was "that's way too much tire for that car." the right side tire was rubbing the tail pipe on the passenger side but no fender rubbing issues.

After some research and consideration, I am going with the stock size. The Nitto NT01s run a little bit wider than gatorbacks but are a little bit smaller diameter. Don't want to deal with mods to make tires fit and 275s on 7.5" wheels look terrible.

Nitto 555r drag radial. 275/40-17 Perfect fit.

275/40-17 Best size tire that I have found for the rear :D
255/40-17 way too short of a tire for the back.
255/50-17 too tall will rub fender lip.

RDLINE, are those stock 7.5" wide wheels? Let me know. The only problem I see is the tire rolling on me in corners with a 7.5" wheel. For your set-up you are using them for drag racing. Tires wider than rim width cause tire roll so I think I may have to buy two wider rims. 8.5" would prolly work well with a 275. I do know that the fox body mustang tends to overseer in corners so the 275 will help.

I had run 275 40 17s for years until I resently went to 315 35 17s on widened 93 wheels

vuzikis, they are 7.5 factory ford wheels. It seems the nitto fit the wheel better than the bfg drag radial in the 275. I had tried the bfg many years ago and didn't like the look ether. I'm not sure about tire roll with the wider tires, I would figure any tire will roll depending on the sidewall.
cobra0393, Yes I second that!!! post some pictures with the 315's!!

Thanks guys!! the wheels actually fit pretty good. I had to run a 1/4" spacer to clear The inside wheel well.
