Scored a NOS Motorcraft belt JK6 894 online for low price

Post by BrentE »

I was looking for parts and did a search by vehicle at an online parts place... Saw they had one Motorcraft JK6 894 serpentine belt for the 93 Cobra (last one in stock, listed as a wholesaler close out) for $11.97. I see them on eBay for over a hundred bucks when available, right now one is there for $109.95 I think. I ordered it Friday, just arrived... Correct NOS belt in perfect shape! With shipping it was less than 17 dollars! I was happy with this find, totally lucked into it. I wish they had more, I would have bought a case of them.

Hi Guys. I might be able to help answer about original belt markings that came on our Cobras.

I'm the original owner as you may know. I have only used two belts on my car over its lifetime and I still have both: the original that came on it and a replacement I bought from my local Ford dealer on July 27, 1995. The problem is I'm not sure which is which. I've switched them off over the years, and according to criteria in the factory service manual, both are still serviceable today.

After taking the belt off my car tonight to compare them, I find one is marked just "JK6-894" and the other with only "F3ZE-8620-A1A". The packaging my replacement came in (yes, I still have the hard paper Motorcraft band the replacement came in) is labeled with both "JK6-894" and "F3ZZ-8620-A". The "F3ZZ" is not a typo, and thus that number doesn't match the F3ZE that shows on one belt.

It's been many years since I dealt with Ford part numbers when working in Product Engineering at a supplier, so my memory is very dim. Anyway, I think the JK6-894 identifies the belt for aftermarket use in servicing just like "FL-1A" identifies an oil filter at a parts store, and the longer hyphenated numbers identify part numbers for Ford's usage in-house. I also seem to recall they used different part numbers in-house: one for engineering and a slightly different one for use on the production line. I'm pretty sure the suffixes "A" and "A1A" only indicate the design revision level.

I'm certain one of my belts is the original......but which one?? Does any of what I see match what you see on your NOS replacement belt? I guess another important question is exactly where did your NOS belt come from? Through normal / approved Ford parts channels? .....or maybe surplus parts inventory someone picked up somewhere? The individual you got it from may not know or care....

If I had to guess, I'd say my belt marked F3ZE-8620-A1A is the original, and the one marked JK6-894 is the replacement. If I get a chance I'll comb through my 21 years of maintenance records tomorrow to see if I can say with confidence which belt is which.

Regards,
Bob

Thanks SPEEDFREEK.

Aaron: Curious what numbering the "F3ZZ-8620-A" belt on your wall has....

My thinking now is that "F3ZE-8620-A1A" identifies the originals from production, and "F3ZZ-8620-A" identifies the service replacement belt which is only marked with "JK6-894".

I think you are correct. The ones I have in my stock are in a cardboard "package" that is labeled with both the JK6-894 and the F3ZZ-8620-A numbers, but the belt itself only has the JK6894 marking on it. I have two of them now and both are identical in the markings - both numbers on the cardboard sleeve, but only the Motorcraft JK6 894 on the belt itself. I did not keep my original since it was thrashed when I replaced it and could not remember what it actually said.

The F3ZE prefix is an engineering number that breaks down into decade, year, model, activity F= Decade (in this case 1990s) Year (3) Z= Mustang E= Engine North America

the F3ZZ prefix is the same except the 4th digit is a Z which is FCSD (Ford Customer Service Division), as in "Service Parts"

Most parts have engineering part numbers on the part, and service numbers on the package. Most of the time they can be cross referenced.

The JK6-894 is the Motorcraft number and since I don't have any old Motorcraft books anymore, I can't exactly say what everything means, but everything does have a meaning. Educated guess, I think the "JK" has something to do with the shape/spec of the belt, such as thickness, or serpentine (as opposed to old style v-belt) 6 would be # of ribs, and 894 is the belt length, not sure if its metric or US...my gut tells me it would be like 89.4 inches but I can't be certain. The old Motorcraft belt catalogs broke down exactly what each digit represented.
