Need help, cobra is not running right

Post by dragrazor »

Hey guys, I need your help and experience. I drove the cobra today for the first time in about 1 month. When I drove out of my garage, I noticed that the car was sluggish. I filled the tank because it was low on gas and got on the highway. The car was running like if it was on 4 cylinders. It just so happens that I was enroute to my buddies mechanic shop. I explained the issue and we changed the fuel filter. He also tested the fuel pressure via the fuel rail. With the hose on the regulator, it had 35psi. With the hose off the regulator, it has 45psi. I took it out for a spin and it was still sluggish. At times, I would feel a pop coming from inside the motor. When the pop occurred, I would feel the pop on my right foot coming from the gas pedal. I decided to take it on the highway. The car still feels sluggish and sputters uncontrollably at about 5000 rpm in every gear. The car idles fine, just does not have the power it had. Any ideas :x

First thing to do is see if it's throwing a code.

No code, one of the first things I checked. The check engine light would have come on right?

No, only "hard" codes throw a CEL. There are several that will cause driveability issues that wont give you a CEL.

They have an excellent write up on pulling codes and troubleshooting on my5oh.com

Maybe the mass air meter, what does it do when you pin it?

Go drive the car and get it up to temp then bring it back and park it. Once it's cool pull the plugs and see who's not behaving. The pop could be a rich situation or something else. If you've got one bank that's rich and the other that is normal then it might be the O2 sensor on that side. If you've done anything around the distributor recently check it and make sure it hasn't worked loose (rare) and advanced or retarded on you.
